This morning, as we were driving to daycare (or "school", as we like to say!), Austin was playing with his toy remote control. You'd think, by the way, that if you give these kids the fake, toy version of something electronic (cell phone, remote, digital camera, etc.) that they'd be happy to play with that one and then would leave the real thing alone. Not so much! And why? The toy versions are way more colorful and tend to do more things with better sound effects!
Anyway, so we're driving to school and he's playing with the remote. He was pushing random buttons and making noises. He finally got on a pattern of flipping this dial around. When you flip it, you either get
- the "weather channel", where someone says, "What a nice day!" in either English, Spanish, or French,
- the "sports channel", where a man yells, "GOOOOAALL!", or
- the "music channel", where you hear Yankee Doodle, This Old Man, or The Itsy Bitsy Spider.
He was in a rhythm. He'd flip to the weather channel and listen to the words, flip to the GOAL! and say "Oohhhhhhhh!!!!!" to echo the guy (while looking at me in the rearview mirror), and then flip to the music channel and DANCE IT UP in his carseat! This kept up for a good majority of the ride and it was so funny to watch! Then he started mixing it up -- mixing the "channel" order around. Finally, he threw in more. After listening to the person announce the weather, especially when it was in another language, he'd babble incoherently, mimicking the person!
I tell you, this kid keeps me entertained! We'll see if he's as into this toy on the way home!

see? this is what we like to read about. this is the smartest, most fun boy EVER!
Hey Emily,
I really like your blog. My 1 yr-old daughter also likes to play with my 'real' cellphone, and I'm constantly having to apologize to random people in my address book when they pick up and start hearing "DA-DA-DA-DA-DA-DA-DA!"
I found you while searching for Bloomington-area bloggers, and I kind of had this weird favor to ask you...
I'm a writer and cartoonist and my brand new syndicated comic strip - "DeFlocked" (endorsed by Larry David) - is one of three new comics up for a vote in your daily paper, The Pantagraph. I'm earnestly looking for some local support.
Would you mind checking out my strip at www.deflocked.com, and, if you like my sense of humor, maybe go here and vote for DeFlocked: http://pantagraph.upickem.net/engine/Votes.aspx?PageType=VOTING&contestid=3000
(Like most newspapers' websites, they make you register first. Hopefully, that's cool) It would only take a second, and it would be a HUGE help to me.
Voting ends at 5 p.m. this Friday, 10/17, so if you could - PLEASE spread the word!
Thanks - I really really appreciate it. Have a great rest of the week, and I'm totally going out to buy that toy remote control!
